RELOCATING CAR DURING COVID-19

Relocating Car during COVID-19

Knowing the best option for relocating your car between states has become more difficult over the past few months because of the coronavirus outbreak.

Should you drive the car yourself? Or should you hire a car transport company? Are you even allowed to travel interstate at the moment? And if so, what are the current rules?

These are some of the questions we set out to answer in this short article.

We’ll be looking at what your choices currently are and what you need to consider. Then we’ll share quick details on the current rules in each state.

Can I still transport my car interstate during the coronavirus?

Yes, you can still transport your car interstate during COVID-19.

Despite the recent changes to interstate borders, car relocation services are considered to be ‘essential services’ by the government.

However, you will be subject to certain rules and restrictions if you attempt to transport your car yourself, depending on which state you are travelling to.

Having said that, the restrictions are continually evolving so please check the latest rules (see detailed information below).

Can I drive my car interstate myself during coronavirus?

Driving your car interstate yourself might feel the most obvious option if you’re also moving home interstate.

However, it most likely isn’t the best option during the coronavirus, primarily because it could put you at additional risk of contracting the virus.

For example, long distance road trips mean you’ll have to stop off to use the bathroom, to eat and also to find a place to sleep for the night. Each of these will put you in contact with others and therefore increases the risk. Depending on the local restrictions when you travel, it might also be much harder to find the things as many are currently closed.

Additionally, you may also have to apply to cross the state border, complete a declaration then abide by certain restrictions such as self-quarantine. Make sure you know the rules before you travel.

Can I hire a professional to transport my car for me?

Yes! In fact, due to the increased border restrictions, it’s a much better idea to hire a professional to relocate your vehicle than attempt to do it yourself.

Doing this will help you avoid a great deal of stress and worry about the move and the risk of contracting the virus. It’s also very convenient, easy to arrange and incredibly affordable, giving you one less thing to worry about.

What are the requirements in my state?

Here’s a quick rundown of the requirements in each state that may apply when transporting your car interstate and/or moving home during the coronavirus.

These are true at the time of writing (May 2020) but may be subject to change as the situation evolves. Please check state rules and requirements well in advance of your intended date of travel and monitor for changes.

What happens if the coronavirus restrictions are relaxed?

Many people have avoided moving home or transporting their car interstate during the crisis.

When the restrictions are lifted, it’s likely that demand will increase and it’s likely to become much harder to find an Australian car transport company to help.

That’s why we advise booking early to avoid disappointment.

Summary

The rules regarding transporting your car interstate during the coronavirus outbreak might seem complicated but they’re here to keep everyone safe. Why not avoid the hassle by hiring a car transportation service to do all the work for you?
